From now on I am going to write this in my bio:

Mary Phillips-Sandy divides her time between Portland, Maine; New York City; Los Angeles; Krakow; and maritime Canada.

I have decided there is no good reason why the division of time must be limited to present time at the exclusion of past time, future time, hypothetical time.

Makes me want to dig out my old Heavens to Betsy tape and throw it at Pinch’s head

Dear newspaper of record,

1. How about next time there is a two-page researched story about the First Lady and her impact on the nation, it goes in the politics section, not the fashion and style section? Also how about it is something she said or did, not something that is affixed to her body?

2. How about next time there is a two-page story about successful screenwriters who are women it goes in the arts section, not the fashion and style section? Did you know there is a whole arts section subcategory for movies? It is right there in the header! MOVIES. Stories about people who write movies might fit nicely there, no?

2a., related. ENOUGH WITH THE PHOTOGRAPHS OF WOMEN WRITERS LYING DOWN OR IN BED. ENOUGH. Either knock it off or start running photos of Spike Jonze and Michel Gondry and Charlie Kaufman and Judd Apatow cuddled up in bed, the covers in disarray, surrounded by fluffy pillows. (Now that I think about it, how adorable would that be?)

Today is my mom’s birthday. No matter how old she gets, this will always be my favorite picture of her.

It was taken on the Upper West Side, sometime in the 1950s, when itinerant “pony men” roamed the streets of the Upper West Side, for photo ops.

I can’t even begin to fathom how marvelous that must have been.
